Our History

D.J. Alexander began life as a residential estate agent in the Leith district of Edinburgh in 1982 but the proprietor, David Alexander, soon discovered the vast untapped potential offered by executive property lettings in the capital and eventually decided to concentrate the firm’s entire efforts in this field.

Nevertheless, after a long and successful history of property lettings, D.J. Alexander returned to its roots in 2005 by launching, or re-launching, its own residential estate agency arm, based at 24 Dundas Street, Edinburgh

Initially, the company had just a handful of letting properties on its books but due purely to generic growth it now manages more than3,000 (2500) houses and flats in Edinburgh (central Scotland) [and almost 1,000 more in Glasgow]. In the spring of 2007 D.J. Alexander opened a property management company in Dubai (with offices opening in London in November 2007 to deal with both property sales and lettings)and plans to launch a London office, dealing in both property sales and lettings, in January 2008.

The growth in business achieved by Alexander’s – as we are also sometimes known colloquially – has been matched by an increasingly targeted way of achieving the best for clients, whether landlords or tenants. A recent innovation has been the introduction of telephone helplines dedicated to different areas of the firm’s operation, i.e. finance, landlords, tenants, new business, maintenance and repairs and emergencies. This helps clients access the right personnel in the shortest possible time, therefore accelerating the solution to any problems or issues that may arise.

Asked to explain the success of D.J. Alexander over a quarter of a century, David Alexander commented: “I think the reason is that we have become big, but not too big for our boots. Although the business has grown more than twenty-fold, we still provide the same individual, highly focussed level of service to each and every client, and at a price that provides real value for money. We realise that every client is different and paying attention to their specific requirements goes a long way to getting a “result” on their behalf.
