My working week...

22/10/2010

Having grown up on a Highlands farm in Easter Ross, it wasn’t too muych of a surprise when Rob Trotter studied agricultural land management at university.
However, after a period in agricultural sales he decided it was time to move away from the rural and embrace city life.
Having joined residential letting company D J Alexander in 2003, he was promoted to senior property manager in charge of new business development two years ago.
A working day usually begins before 8am and rarely finishes before 6pm.
The global client base means staying connected is essential.
Trotter said: “Although most of our properties under management are located in either Edinburgh or Glasgow, our landlord client base is international.
“Many of them will use the weekend to send messages or inquiries related to their properties so when I log on to my computer on a Monday morning there will be literally dozens of emails from across the globe.”
Like every other area of property, residential letting has gone through major changes in recent years. New buy-to-let investors are currently rare while landlords tend to be owner-occupiers letting out their main homes,
Trotter said: “To add to the client who has been posted abroad and wants to let their home for a temporary period, we now have clients who have traded up or down to a new property but don’t see the point of selling in the current market.
“And the restrictions on mortgage lending means there is a growing demand for rented accommodation from families as well as from individuals and couples.”
Still, when the working week finishes he is happy to get home as quickly as possible to wife Julia and his new baby.
