No transfer on the horizon – despite the smiles

Steven Currie got off to a great start as the property manager at D.J. Alexander, the Edinburgh-based rental agency, overseeing 132 flat lettings in May – a new monthly record for the firm.

But although D.J. Alexander is well known for securing rented homes in Edinburgh and Glasgow for professional footballers and coaches – including Lee Naylor and Kenny Miller of Celtic and the Hibernian manager, John Collins – Sir Alex Ferguson, the boss of Manchester United (pictured here with Currie), is not among the new tenant intake.

The picture was taken at the recent Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) awards, where Currie was the guest of the Northern Ireland international, Colin Murdoch. On joining Hibernian three years ago, the player rented a flat through D.J. Alexander and before leaving Easter Road for Crewe, expressed an interest in property investment in Edinburgh. Currie consequently advised him to buy a flat in Cumberland Street, in the New Town; that was two years ago and since then the property has not had one period of rental void, making it a nice little earner for the footballer.

As for that photo opportunity, Currie – a Hibs supporter – said that Sir Alex displayed none of his reputation for being crotchety. “He was extremely personable and very happy to be photographed,” Steven said. “Unfortunately, he did not have any accommodation requirements in Scotland at the moment.”

Luckily for D.J. Alexander, the Man Utd boss was not on the lookout for training staff either – Steven is a qualified fitness instructor who previously managed health clubs at the Capital Moat House, Caledonian and Holyrood hotels in Edinburgh.
